Nearby Sandy Springs: After the female HERO driver spotted a car whose driver she thought might need assistance, Alpharetta police found the man had an apparent gunshot wound.
A Georgia HERO driver on patrol on Ga. 400 northbound in Alpharetta spotted what she thought might be a stranded motorist at the Kimball Bridge Road overpass at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday. But what she discovered when she stopped to offer help was a man who had died from an apparent gunshot wound was in the car. The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety is investigating the incident, said spokesman George Gordon via email. The female HERO driver saw the vehicle parked on the right shoulder of Ga. 400 at the overpass. "She approached the vehicle wanting to determine if she came across a stranded motorist," Gordon said. "Upon looking inside the vehicle, she discover an apparent deceased male driver. After she called for assistance, Alpharetta …

GDOT wrapped up construction on the northbound ramp of Ga. 400 at Abernathy Road.
Georgia Department of Trasportation crews have finished widening the northbound Ga. 400 ramp at Abernathy Road to ease congestion along the commuter route into Perimeter, wsbtv.com reports. The $2 million project was paid for with excess revenues from Ga. 400 tolls, according to the report. The Ga. 400 corridor is essential for the thousands of people that enter the Perimeter area in Dunwoody and Sandy Springs on a daily basis. “We are the corporate center of the southeast United States and transportation matters,” said Yvonne Williams, president and CEO of the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts. The project wasn’t expected to be completed until th beginning of the year, but was finished ahead of schedule.

The business district passed a resolution to put its support behind the reconstruction of the junction in the wake of the failure of TSPLOST.
Perimeter businesses are putting their support behind major improvements at the I-285 and Ga. 400 junction, an intersection that studies show is one of the most congested in the nation. Perimeter Community Improvement Districts said the $450 million project is key to ensuring the health of the Perimeter area, one of the largest office markets in metro Atlanta. “The passage of the I-285 and Georgia 400 resolution represents substantial business support from the Central Perimeter business community,” said Yvonne Williams, president and CEO of the PCIDs. “Our boards include the owners of the highest valued commercial property in the PCIDs, which form the heart of the Central Perimeter Market." The Perimeter office market draws more than 120,…

Commuter traffic on Ga. 400 southbound was as bad today as it is during a normal morning commute, even though the shoulders had been opened to accommodate more traffic, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Gov. Nathan Deal announced the plan to relieve traffic along the heavily trafficked corridor in his State of the State address in January.

Next week, drivers can use the shoulder of the road on southbound Ga. 400 on their morning commute between the Northridge and Holcomb Bridge exits and between Northridge and North Springs MARTA station exit, state transportation officials said. The shoulder will be closed at the exit ramps in the southbound corridor, in a plan transportation officials have mapped out as a "flex" lane. The new rules start Monday, and were described at a Tuesday press conference as a low-cost way to improve traffic flow along a major commuter route, according to Georgia Department of Transportation officials. The shoulders will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. during the weekeday commute. Pull-off areas for motorists who break down have been built by GDOT…

Dunwoody commuters - put these dates on your calendar. Because of cold weather, MARTA canceled the Ga. 400 lane closures planned for Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Now, weather permitting, the lane closures for the construction of a bridge at the Buckhead MARTA station will resume Monday and continue through Friday. The construction is not during regular commute hours - it's from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each day - but it could still affect some commute and travel schedules. MARTA, along with the Buckhead Community Improvement District, Georgia Department of Transportation, State Road and Toll Authority, Federal Transit Administration and the city of Atlanta, has started construction on a pedestrian bridge to reconnect Buckhead's east and…

Dunwoody residents, Perimeter Center workers will benefit from better access to Ga. 400;
The project, discussed for years, still has its critics
One of the worst traffic gridlocks in Perimeter Center should be eased when a new interchange with Ga. 400 opens next summer. Aug. 31 is the planned opening date of a ballyhooed $17.1 million interchange at Hammond Drive and Ga. 400. It will provide drivers with a third route to northbound Ga. 400. The current two routes involve plodding 1.5 miles north of I-285 to get on via Abernathy Road, or fighting across I-285. The new interchange has a lot of history. And it's still controversial. For starters, it's been talked about for 15 years. A few years ago, area residents cited the failure to build it as an example of negligent leadership of Fulton and DeKalb counties. These residents went on to form the cities of Sandy Springs and Dunwoody. …
