The annual 5K, 1 mile and tot trot benefits Austin Elementary.

The annual Dunwoody Dash is set for Saturday, March 16, 2013, to benefit Austin Elementary School. This race is open to everyone in the community in support of the school. A map of the run course is attached to this article.

Austin Elementary to Expand to 900 Students

The DeKalb Board of Education has approved a new construction plan that impacts one of Dunwoody's schools.

Austin Elementary will grow to 900 students under a new construction plan adopted on Wednesday by the DeKalb Board of Education. By a vote of 6-3, the school board approved a construction plan that calls for the expansion of five elementaries to 900 students, including Austin Elementary.  According to the AJC, the facilities plan, which will be partially funded by local sales tax revenue, also calls for nearby Chamblee High School to expand to 1,600 students. The final plan adopted by the board did not call for any school closures or major changes to school boundaries. School Board Delays Vote on Changes to Austin, Vanderlyn, Chesnut, Dunwoody Elementary Schools

The vote was delayed until Jan. 7, 2013

The Dekalb school board delayed a vote Monday that could affect attendance lines for Dunwoody's elementary's schools in the 2018-2019 school year. The vote was delayed until Jan. 7 - a change that was spurred by parent outcry across the district and concern about the changes. The board could finalize the changes at a Jan. 23 meeting. The changes in the Dunwoody cluster revolve around the demolition and reconstruction of Austin Elementary as part of the new SPLOST. A larger Austin Elementary School for 900 students would siphon more than 350 students from the Vanderlyn school district. First of all, almost no local government ever decides to do things the correct way. Second, since tax-payer money is going to rebuild Austin, let it happen. Then just move all the 170 or so kids from one Vanderlyn apt complex and be done with it. Austin will probably be at capacity by 2018 with current zoning or very close.
