DeKalb Schools to Hang on To Valuable Property

A proposal by the Superintendent to raise a potential $20 milllion from the sale of Admas Stadium was voted down by the board.

DeKalb Schools faced a multi-million deficit this summer that increased class sizes, led to teacher attrition and too many spending cuts to count. But the school board decided this week it would hang on to a property valued at $18 million to $20 million. Why? Board member Paul Womack, a lame-duck board member, said the property is one of the few logical places to build a school in a district that’s bursting with students, according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution. Should the school board make up a huge deficit with a sale like this? Let us know in comments. Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson had proposed selling the property at Adams Stadium and some of the land in the busy intersection of North Druid Hills and Briarcliff Roads, reports …

If they sold the property, where would the kids play football? Several schools share Adams Stadium. Also, just a few months ago, they approved letting a charter school use Heritage school. Now, are they planning to sell it out from under that charter? What happened to the charter school?   more ›

DeKalb Schools Responds to SACS

The oversight body again warned DeKalb Schools earlier this month after numerous complaints from parents and staff.

DeKalb Schools Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson has sent a letter in response to a warning from the school's accrediting agency earlier this month, reports 11 Alive News. The warning letter from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, which has the power to pull DeKalb's accreditation. cited numerous complaints from staff and parents. Atkinson wrote that the "district has implemented plans to improve upon all standards." SACS letter in September specifically cited the board's legal costs. The district has been accumulating legal fees related to charges of corruption and internal dealing by a former superintendent and a former executive staffer. Report: DeKalb Schools Closed Doors To Meeting

The Wednesday meeting was called to discuss criticism of the board for mismanagement by a district oversight body, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Parents were stunned to be locked out of a DeKalb Schools meeting called Wednesday to respond to allegations of mismanagement by an oversight body levied by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, reports the AJC. One parent was baffled that the board opened the doors to the board room to declare that the discussion would not be public, according to the report. SACS had recently sent a letter to DeKalb Schools regarding money allegedly overspent on lawyers and other mismanagement, sources said. The school dstrict struggled mightily to pass a budget this summer that included an $85-milllion deficit. The budget was finally passed in late July and included teacher cuts. The cuts to teachers was planned to be achieved through …

DeKalb Schools Warned Again

Oversight agency is asking for responses to numerous, ongoing complaints.

DeKalb County schools aren't out of thee weeds with an oversight accrediting agency, according to local news reports. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools are asking for a response from the board after numerous complaints from employees and the community, WABE reported this week. The schoool was already under review by SACS. A SACS official says the board has failed to follow through on its financial responsibilities. He fired hard at the board in the WABE report. “This system currently operates having two law firms on retainer because they could not agree on one law firm," Elgart says, " They have knowingly budgeted each year approximately $1 million for their day-to-day legal fees and each year, they are exceeding that by …

A note from a parent expressed frustration that the district's problems seem to be an ongoing issue with no real solutions and no system for a solution. Sounds like the Dunwoody city council.....   more ›

DeKalb Schools need to continue to improve, says group

SACs says district has made strides, but more work ahead

DeKalb County school board members were told Wednesday by an oversight organization that the district would have to continue to improve to retain its accreditation, according to a story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. AdvancED, the parent company of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, put the district's accreditation "on advisement" about a year ago. Since then, the group has interviewed more than a thousand students, parents and faculty members about issues in the district. SACS told DeKalb schools last year to hire a new superintendent. The district has hired Cheyl Atkinson during that period. On Wednesday, SACS called for further improvement in planning, training and creating clear lines of command from top district …
