Homegoing: Fallen Police Officer 'A Real Hero' [Photos]

The funeral was held Saturday for Officer Shawn Smiley, who was killed with Officer Richard Halford in a police helicopter crash, last Saturday night.

Family, friends and colleagues poured praised on their memories of Atlanta Police Officer Shawn Smiley, Saturday, during his funeral at First Baptist Church of Atlanta.   Smiley and Officer Richard Halford were killed in a police helicopter crash at Martin Luther King and H.E. Holmes Drive on Saturday, Nov. 3, as they searched for a missing 9-year-old boy. The child was later found safe. Hundreds of officers from APD, Fulton County and nearby areas paid tribute in formation before the service. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and Atlanta City Council also paid tribute to Smiley at the service. “When I got the call last Saturday night, I knew it was not going to be good,” said Atlanta Police Chief George Turner. “I didn’t know how bad it was …

Tucker Butterfly Garden An Inspiration for Brook Run Project

Dunwoody Garden Club Gets Ideas for Plants, Signage on Visit to Mature Garden

If imitation is the finest form of flattery, the Dunwoody Garden Club paid the stewards of the Tucker Butterfly Garden a nice compliment last week. The Dunwoody club is co-sponsoring the new pollinator garden in the greenhouse-barn area of Brook Run Park. Club members and volunteers from the Community Garden, the other project co-sponsor, tilled the ground and amended the soil in the garden last Saturday. Both groups began planting the garden on Saturday. As preparation for installing plant material, Karen Converse led the Dunwoody Garden Club on a visit to the Tucker Butterfly Garden last week. She wanted club members to meet Dawn Hines, a co-sponsor of the Tucker garden, and to see the type of established pollinator garden the club and …

Great idea for the butterflies. Let me suggest bluebird houses too. My son's eagle scout project with scout troop764 was blue bird houses placement from Perimeter College up through Dunwoody Nature center area, plus in neighbor's homes. The increase in bluebirds in the 4 years is amazing.   more ›

Garden Hills' 40th Annual Ice Cream Social

Garden Hills hosted its 40th annnual ice cream social on Sunday afternoon. Ice cream wasn't the only incentive; inflatables, dunking booths, and pony rides were among the festivities. While it was a free event, tickets were purchased in order to participate in the activities. Proceeds go to the Garden Hills community and have benefited the local fire station and police department in the past.

Brook Run Park Greenhouse Area Beautification Project Under Way

Community Garden, Dunwoody Garden Club begin installing pollinator garden

Reaching into a mound of freshly delivered Pro mix, mushroom compost and chicken manure, Betty Dworschak scooped up a double handful of the rich soil amendment, inhaled its earthy fragrance, turned to her fellow volunteers and shouted, “I’ll never go hungry again!” The accent of the co-president of the Dunwoody Garden Club didn’t quite match the syrupy sweetness of Scarlett O’Hara’s Southern drawl or the dire circumstances of the heroine in Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind. But any butterflies, bees or other insects within earshot got the message: They’re not going to go hungry – or thirsty – again, either! The planting mix was for a new pollinator garden in the greenhouse and barn area in Brook Run Park. The garden is a joint effort…
