The Dunwoody Nature Center hosted its 7th annual Monarchs & Margaritas fundraiser on Saturday, April 27 at the South Terraces Atrium. Approximately 200 guests were able to raise over $40,000 for the Nature Center in support the center’s mission of inspiring the love of nature and cultivating environmental understanding. Diners will eat for free during Another Broken Egg Cafe’s soft opening over a three-day period, and the Dunwoody Nature Center is one of the beneficiaries.
Another Broken Egg Cafe is fast growing and opens its latest location in Perimeter Village Shopping Center, in April, with free meals. Donations from patrons over a three-day period benefit the Spruill Center for the Arts, the Dunwoody Nature Center and Sandy Springs-based Community Assistance Center. Each charity has its own day, Thursday, April 4; Friday, April 5, and Saturday, April 6, respectively. “If you want to leave $1 that’s fine. If you want to leave $100, we love that too,” said Felicity Hall, general manager for the new Dunwoody cafe. Faced with stormwater and erosion control challenges at its rain garden, the Dunwoody Nature Center needed to look only two miles away for a community-minded solution. Dunwoody-based Oldcastle, Inc., provided the Nature Center with enhancements to its rain garden and a new retaining wall, built from the company’s Belgard® hardscape product, along with a team of Oldcastle employee volunteers to install it. “Recent wet weather events presented several stormwater and erosion control issues at our rain garden,” said Alan Mothner, director of the Dunwoody Nature Center. “We knew we needed a way to address the heavy flows but never thought our needs would be answered by a company right here in our backyard. The Dunwoody Nature Center, city of Dunwoody and Oldcastle will hold a dedication ceremony at the Dunwoody Nature Center (DNC) marking the construction of a new retaining wall and enhanced rain garden. Inspired by the DNC’c mission and seeing this need within the community, Oldcastle reached out to DNC to show its dedication to the betterment of the community. Representatives from the DNC, Oldcastle and the city will be on hand to formally dedicate the newly completed retaining wall and discuss the benefits of corporate, city and community partnership. The Dunwoody Nature has launched a Leadership-in-Training and Environmental Stewardship (LITES) program and is now accepting applications from rising 9th to 12th graders who are interested in enhancing their leadership training and environmental awareness through this summer program. Using a nationally recognized leadership curriculum, LITES will spend the week learning leadership skills while emphasizing nature based problem solving. The goal of the camp is to teach young leaders how to use their natural skills as leaders to address environmental problems, thus encouraging a lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship. REI, Arborguard and a lot of volunteers made these new treeswings possible.
The Dunwoody Nature Center has completed the installation of its tree swings as part of its front meadow improvements. The tree swings were accomplished with the support of REI, which funded a grant to purchase the materials needed for the improvements; and Arborguard, which donated the professional installation of the tree swings. All of the other improvements to the front meadow have been powered entirely by volunteers. Other improvements have included the addition of 13 garden beds; a tool shed; picnic benches; and a new trail from the meadow to the education building.

The Dunwoody Nature Center has announced the return of its annual “Monarchs & Margaritas” fundraiser. The event is set for Saturday, April 27,from 6:30 to 10:30 pm at the South Terraces Atrium, 115 Perimeter Center Place, in Dunwoody. Monarchs & Margaritas is the Dunwoody Nature Center’s largest annual fundraiser. Proceeds support conservation efforts and educational programming throughout the year.
