The Associated Press reported that Penn State received an unprecedented series of penalties Monday following the guilty verdict of Jerry Sandusky in his child sex abuse case and the building evidence that Penn State officials hid the allegations from authorities for more than a decade. "Football will never again be paced ahead of educating, nurturing and protecting young people," NCAA President Mark Emmert said in delivering the sanctions. Among the penalties was a $60 million fine to be paid into an endowment for programs designed to prevent child sexual abuse and for assisting victims of abuse. None of the money can be used for programs at Penn State. In addition, there is a four-year ban on bowl games, a loss of 20 scholarships per year…

Three "founding mothers" of center join students in ceremony
The Dunwoody Nature Center announced the celebration of its 20th anniversary last Friday by unveiling a new logo and a new website. The logo was unveiled on the sign at the main entrance to the nature center at 5343 Roberts Drive by an excited group of students from nearby Austin Elementary School. Under the supervision of Alan Mothner, the nature center's executive director, the students gathered around the new sign, which was hidden from view on both sides by large brown tarps. Mothner told the students that three of the founders of the Nature Center were attending the event. “If it wasn’t for them, you wouldn’t have this,” he said. Mothner then asked the attending founders -- Pat Adams, Marilyn Dalrymple and Kathy Hanna – to join the …

The Walmart Foundation and the Dunwoody Walmart have awarded a grant of $1,000 to Vanderlyn Elementary School to be used in the school’s organic gardening program. The grant was awarded through the foundation’s Local Community Contribution/Hunger Outreach Grant Program. “We believe that your organization is doing important work to the communities you serve, and we are proud that we are able to support you in your efforts,” the foundation told Tina Wilkinson, a parent volunteer at Vanderlyn, in an e-mail announcing the selection of Vanderlyn for the grant. Wilkinson, with pre-approval from Principal Noel Maloof, filled out and submitted the grant application. This is the second grant Walmart has awarded Vanderlyn. The previous grant was …

Which do you prefer?
It can be the focus of silent judgment, the fake tree standing in the middle of the living room. Dead tree purists won't go near them. But for others, the thought of chopping down a tree to sit in your house for two weeks, dropping needles and dripping sap, just isn't palatable. According to the National Christmas Tree Association, the number of real trees purchased in 2010 was 27 million, while fake trees were 8.2 million (note: you only need to buy an artificial tree once). So what are your thoughts - does a tree need to be real or does an artificial do the trick?
