Should Brookhaven, Chamblee and Dunwoody Form A Fire Department?

Dunwoody officials proposed the idea last week, and Patch wants your opinion in our latest poll.

At a retreat last week, Dunwoody city officials decided to ask the leaders of Brookhaven, Chamblee and Doraville to consider joining together to form a fire department. Dunwoody officials believe such a department would provide better fire protection to those cities than DeKalb County currently does, according to the Reporter Newspapers, without an increase in service fees. Brookhaven leaders were quoted in the article as being interested in the idea, but both Brookhaven and Dunwoody leaders believe such a department is a few years down the road. Recently, the city of Dunwoody explored the idea of creating its own fire department. This is not the first time that the idea of three or four neighboring cities joining forces to provide …

Dunwoody chose to research if their own Fire Department makes sense in light of DeKalb County actions to raise fire service fees to cities and reduce service, at the same time. The fee for fire service, paid to DeKalb County is ratcheting up slowly, while fire stations are closed and EMS is moved further away from Dunwoody. So why not study the issue? Dunwoody Awaits Study Exploring a City Fire Department

Councilmembers have embraced the idea of an analysis of what it would cost to break away from DeKalb County, where fire taxes have risen in three of the last four years.

It sounds ambitious. Dunwoody officials recently broached the idea of creating their own fire department. From scratch. The plans are preliminary, at best In fact, it might even be be a little prior to preliminary. The City Council in July informally proposed that the city's staff create an analysis that would look at the feasibility of standing up a Dunwoody fire department. If it were approved - and any council vote is way down the road -  it would mean a break from a DeKalb Fire service that Dunwoody officials have largely praised for the 300 monthly calls it handles in the city each month. But costs for fire service from DeKalb County have been rising for years, while some say that Dunwoody is no longer as large a priority for the …

Does Dunwoody Need Its Own Fire Department?

Tell us if you think the city should seriously consider shouldering the financial responsibility of its already established police force and a yet-unknown Dunwoody Fire Department.

Dunwoody is facing rising county taxes for fire protection. Partly because of that, Dunwoody officials have broached the idea of creating their own fire department. Make no mistake, the reality of any Dunwoody FD is a long ways off. A long way. There's no financial analysis (although its currently being prepared) and it's unclear if Dunwoody would need to partner with other municipalities to make it an economic reality. In short, there's way more questions than answers. Councilman Doug Thompson, saying he was not ready to yet pull the trigger on a Dunwoody FD at a recent council meeting said this, "If you look at it - where it's trending - are the taxpayers of the city of Dunwoody willing to be better served by being with the city of …
