Contractors Prepping Diverging Diamond Interchange for Landscaping Design

Dunwoody commuters drive through the Ashford-Dunwoody Road DDI daily.

From Susan Long with the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts: Work started Wednesday to prepare the I-285 and Ashford Dunwoody Road Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) for the installation of a distinctive landscaping design that will showcase the innovative Perimeter interchange. E.R. Snell Contractors will spend two weeks removing sod, existing crape myrtle trees and three large pine trees, then the week of Feb. 4 will begin a week of grading the site. The installation of landscaping materials will start in mid-February and be completed by the end of March. The Georgia Department of Transportation included basic funding for landscaping in the DDI construction contract. The Perimeter Community Improvement Districts (PCIDs) voted …

Pedestrian Walkway Opens at I-285 Interchange

Dunwoody Police report that the newly configured interchange is now open to pedestrians.

A rebuilt pedestrian crossing is now open at the reconfigured Ashford Dunwoody, I-285 intersection. according to Dunwoody Police. The intersection opened in late spring after it was reconfigured into Georgia's first diverging diamond interchange, a novel design that allows interstate traffic to enter the freeway on both sides of the interchange. The new pedestrian walkway runs down the center of the I285 overpass and is protected from traffic by a 5-foot concrete barrier. The pedestrian access has been closed since June to do the construction work - which included the walkway, signal timers and pedestrian islands.

Is it just me, or is the Ashford-Dunwoody Interchange project completely asinine? I don't see how, with as much money as this project is costing, how this isn't a waste of tax payer money, or that we'll see any significant benefit with this plan. I think whoever came up with this design and idea needs to under a psychiatric evaluation !   more ›

'Slip Lane' at I-285 Interchange to Open Tuesday

The lane from Lake Hearn Drive to Ashford Dunwoody Road will reopen to traffic as part of the realignment of the interchange.

A new "slip lane" from Lake Hearn Drive to Ashford Dunwoody Road is scheduled to open back up Tuesday as part of the ongoing realignment of the I-285 interchange in Dunwoody, according to officials with the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts. The interchange was realigned June 3 to become Georgia first "diverging diamond interchange." “The new ‘slip lane’ replicates the access to major employers such as Auto Trader, Cox Communications and Crawford and Company just as it did before the lane was closed for DDI construction,” said David Purcell, chief operating officer of the PCIDs, a partner in the interchange project with the Georgia Department of Transportation. “The ‘slip lane’ was paved during the weekend and the guardrail will be…

Diverging Diamond to Open June 4

The intersection will become operational June 4. Build out of the interchange will take another three months.

The reconfigured interchange at Ashford Dunwoody Road and I-285 that's designed to reduce frustrating traffic backups is expected to be operational June 4. The "diverging diamond" alignment, the first in Georgia, will put cars which would travel in the right-hand lanes into the left lanes of traffic while in the interchange, allowing them to make left turns unimpeded onto I-285. You can view a simulation of the I-285 interchange. The loop ramp used to access I-285 east from the interchange will be removed. The eastbound ramp is a major contributor to the congestion in the interchange, according to transportation officials. The new alignment is designed to reduce traffic during peak hours up to 20 percent and increase safety. Once the new …

Construction Continues on Diverging Diamond interchange

Night closures on Ashford Dunwoody Road

Monday night, work began on the diverging diamond interchange going in at the bridge on Ashford Dunwoody Road over I-285. Work will continue starting at 9 p.m. Tuesday night, the left southbound lane of Ashford Dunwoody Road will close for night construction to remove street lights from the raised median. On Wednesday, the right lanes of the Ashford Dunwoody Road Bridge, both northbound and southbound, will close for night construction. Last weekend, the westbound right lane of I-285 at the Ashford Dunwoody Road Bridge was closed for a short time Saturday morning. The brief lane closure was required to secure the bolt pattern of the existing structures holding up directional signs on the I-285 and Ashford Dunwoody Road Interchange Bridge…

Photos: Diverging Diamond Intersection Project Begins

Work begins Ashford Dunwoody Road and 285

Monday, crews began removing reees along the westbound entrance to 285 at Ashford Dunwoody Road. The tree removal is the first step in a project that will reconfigure the way the bridge over and entrances to 285 at Ashford Dunwoody Road. When construction is complete, which is expected in September, the new road configuration will have drivers shift to the "wrong side of the road" as they approach either side of the bridge. Drivers heading to I-285 will turn directly onto a ramp without having to cross on-coming traffic. Drivers heading straight through the interchange will return to the "right side of the road" after crossing the bridge. The interchange is expected to reduce traffic delays by 15 to 20 percent, according to the Perimeter …

Diverging Diamond Project at 285/Ashford Dunwoody Starts Next Week

Project will alter highway crossing, bring new design to Georgia

Next week, the Ashford Dunwoody Road Bridge over 285 will begin getting a facelift, bringing a new traffic flow design to the state of Georgia. Construction crews will start in on the state's first diverging diamond interchange. According to the PCID, the new interchange is expected to reduce traffic delays during evening rush hours up …

Disclaimer - I'm not a city planner or civil engineer. That said, I think a big point that needs to be emphasized is safety. Apparently this creates more "free turns" - which has shown to significantly reduce the number of accidents in studies from diverging diamonds implemented in the Midwest states. I believe the creation of left turns (think coming down AD from Marist to go west on 285) onto …   more ›
