DeKalb county wants to know residents' thoughts about the zoning code update. The update "is to implement the policies of the DeKalb County 2015 Comprehensive Plan. Its goal is to create a user-friendly document and to balance greater design standards," the DeKalb County Planning & Sustainability website states. According to the Medlock Area Neighborhood Association, the DeKalb Board of Commissioners will vote on the update on May 28, and it goes into effect August 2013. Commissioners Jeff Rader, Elaine Boyer and Kathie Gannon represent portions of Chamblee Dunwoody, Brookhaven, and north Atlanta. The county has eliminated the $30 registration fee effective Wednesday.
DeKalb County is making its recycling service free to residents. Starting Wednesday, Sept. 26, the county is eliminating the $30 registration fee for curbside recycling making it free for DeKalb residents. “We think that by removing the cost barrier and increasing education on how and what to recycle, our citizens will embrace it,” said DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis. The DeKalb Sanitation Division has a waste reduction blueprint and a goal to reduce landfill disposal of solid waste and increase recycling. The goal is to increase residential recycling from 21 percent today to 40 percent by 2016, or approximately 64,000 residential homes. Andrea Sneiderman was arrested Thursday morning and charged with murder and other charges.
Andrea Sneiderman has been charged with murder, insurance fraud and perjury in connection with the shooting death of her husband, Rusty Sneiderman. The indictments were announced by the DeKalb County’s District Attorney Robert James on Thursday afternoon. DeKalb is the first county in metro Atlanta that has reported mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Eight different traps have captured the insects, which could indicate a pervasive season for the disease carrying insects. So far, all the traps that have caught them are inside the Perimeter area, but officials are telling everyone to take precautions.

The DeKalb County Jobs Bus will be stationed at DeKalb Peachtree Airport from noon to 5 p.m. May 12. The bus will be located at 2000 Airport Road, Ste. 212. The mobile unit supports the ONE DeKalb Works initiative by providing work readiness services and helping to put DeKalb County residents back to work. The mobile unit also provides services, including job search assistance, adult workshops and training, resume writing, and interviewing tips. The new location of the DeKalb County Police Department's North Precinct is on hold until voters in Brookhaven vote this summer on whether to become a city, DeKalb County officials said. The new facility was scheduled in 2011 to be built on a five-acre parcel of land near DeKalb-Peachtree Airport off Clairmont, between Bragg and Young streets, but after Gov. Nathan Deal signed a bill to create a charter for a new city of Brookhaven, county officials decided it was best to "assess its resources," according to DeKalb County spokesman Burke Brennan. Gov. Nathan Deal is expected to make a decision on a bill that would create a new city in Brookhaven early next week, according to the Governor's press office. Stephanie Mayfield, Deal's press secretary said that the office couldn't comment on whether the Governor would sign the bill. The Georgia General Assembly passed the Brookhaven cityhood bill in the final hours of Sine Die and now rests on the desk of Gov. Nathan Deal. Deal can either sign the bill, veto it, or simply take no action on it whatsoever. If he signs the bill, the issue of Brookhaven incorporation will be put to voters on July 31. The economy is on the upswing, according to many forecasters, with unemployment levels reaching the lowest levels they’ve been in four years. But there are still plenty of people out there still looking for work. A jobs fair in DeKalb County is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mauel Maloof Auditorium at 1300 Commerce Dr. in Decatur.
