Dunwoody Jewish Community Honors Tradition with Hanukkah Celebrations

Local synagogues kick off the eight-day holiday with reflection, parties and plenty of jelly doughnuts to go around

Hanukkah begins Wednesday at sundown with the lighting of the first candle on the menorah, and the Jewish community of Dunwoody is preparing for the holiday's eight days of reflection and celebration. "It's a time for us to remember who we are and what we are and celebrate the Jews being Jewish," said Rabbi Binyonmin Friedman of Congregation Ariel. That doesn't exclude non-Jews from joining in the celebrations, he added, and there are several Hanukkah events in the coming days open to the community at large. Hanukkah's historical roots go back more than 2,200 years ago, when Syrian forces ransacked and desecrated the temple in Jerusalem.
