[NOTICE]: If you object to burglars getting shot, here's how you can personally do something aboutRead More it -- post your home address right here online AND put a conspicuous sign on your door assuring burglars that you will not shoot them. If everyone who feels like you did these simple things, we could realistically cut down on the number of burglars who get shot in the act. YOUR MOVE.

Have we forgotten Sandy Hook, Fort Hood and Columnbine among others? One only needs to watch theRead More nightly news to figure out PEOPLE WITH GUNS ARE CAPABLE OF ENDING LIVES. How typical of Georgia...fireworks that shoot into the air are illegal, but firearms that do the same thing AND are capable of ending life are legal. Gee, firearms in churches and bars sounds like a swell idea Deal!
Dave April 23, 2014 at 07:50 pm
Had the good guys in Sandy Hook, Fort Hood and Columbine had guns, the outcome could have been muchRead More different. I avoid gun free zones for this very reason. Criminals don't respect the law and that leaves people in gun free zones vulnerable. "firearms that do the same thing"..........I never saw a firearm move out of the safe and shoot into the air. Next Independence Day, maybe I should leave the safe unlocked and see if they get out then and act out.

Before my kids could drive, my wife and I had to pick them up at their friends' homes. I wouldRead More always ask my wife to go with me to the door because I didn't know how folks would react seeing a Black man by himself at their door. With this new carry law in effect, I'll think twice before knocking on any doors whenever I'm by myself in certain areas of this state. Call me a hoplophobe if you want.

Cops got a chance to play with their toys. Relax people. It's not like you had to respondRead More personally. Stop saying it's a waste of money. Then money is absolutely minimal. These guys were not called away from their golf games. I would also like to compliment the responders for not accidentally killing someone. It showed professionalism and did not add to the "trend" of killing "innocent" people; which is becoming an issues to watch. The people incensed over this should focus their anger on plastic shopping bags as many others are doing over at another great Patch piece. Evil lurks at the checkout counters across America!

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions.
Seamus Carty April 23, 2014 at 06:44 pm
Why do we discriminate based on race to show that discrimination based on race is wrong?
Seamus Carty April 23, 2014 at 06:47 pm
"The goal of Affirmative was to right an over two hundred years wrong." My family did notRead More get to the US until 1948. Are we part of the two hundred years of wrong? Why should my orthopedic surgeon's kid get preferential treatment over my nephew (son of a plumber) based on the relative complexions?

Hmm--it's all about academics. That's awesome. I wonder why kids play lacrosse or volunteer atRead More church, or play an instrument. After all, you shoulndt take into account one factor other than test scores. Cool. I just happen to think that not many of you believe that's the way it works.

Chris P April 23, 2014 at 06:29 pm
jMichael with regards to questions 1 - 3, you asked these questions and I responded with theRead More answers. Is there something specific that has not been answered? In question 4 you asked if sin was defined in the Constitution which you knew of course is not. I did however give examples of sin (as defined in the Bible) which are not mentioned in the Constitution but I expect that you would agree that the actions I described are also unlawful. Regarding your statement, "Using your citations, and Leviticus aside, I find Scripture to be be mute on same-sex relations." You asked for specific passages in the Bible where marriage is defined as being between a man and a woman. You asked for a minimum of three and I provided much more than that. Thus for you to say that scripture is irrelevant and mute in this matter is a false statement. Thank you for the last word and for a good debate.
Chris P April 23, 2014 at 06:36 pm
amy2go please explain why the tax status of a church has any bearing on this arguement?

"It’s beginning to cost this county a lot of taxpayer money" ... welcome to DeKalb!Read More (Burrell Ellis, Crawford Lewis, Derwin Brown... greed, violence and corruption in government = $$$$$ for taxpayers.)
David Brown April 23, 2014 at 09:32 am
Twin, you were probably referring to Sidney Dorsey, not Derwin Brown. Dorsey was convicted ofRead More assassinating Brown in 2000.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
Millsey April 23, 2014 at 04:53 pm
So educational professionals and people that hire these students out of college or high schoolRead More shouldn't have a seat at the table? Who should make curriculum decisions? The local school board member that doesn't know anything about a high quality education? The state government that might think creationism and abstinence only education is still what our children should be learning? I'd rather have the Common Core which brought together education professionals from all of the states to make sure my kids have a leg up when they graduate High School. They also brought in companies that have decades of education or hiring experience. What's wrong with having people that know what they are talking about, setting our policy? I'd rather have professionals making these decisions and not some groups that create facebook pages and youtube videos demonizing Common Core because they don't want to listen to the facts.
Bonnie Parker April 23, 2014 at 05:12 pm
In the time some of you have spent obsessing about this, you probably could have home-schooled yourRead More kids a couple of grades. I don't know what you're so het up about, but I suspect it's not the quality of your kids' education.
Susan Harris April 23, 2014 at 08:18 pm
"About the "socialist" or anti-American aspect- I know what people are talkingRead More about,.....There are to my knowledge, no CC social studies textbooks yet. It is the textbook publishers themselves (who helped write the CC and will produce all further materials anyway) who are twisted in this way. School boards don't actually read the textbooks they order....I didn't notice either until the CC thing came up. Then I said "What the hell is this?" ................................................................. .................................................................................. To put your mind at ease, what you were reading in your child's social studies books did not come from standards developed from the Common Core. CC standards only covers the content areas of literacy and math. On a separate note, High school history teachers, including myself, have long opined that there is a general void of knowledge coming from students in the lower grades. Since CT's American history standards received a failing grade from the notable Thomas B. Fordham foundation this is not surprising. But it is unacceptable. Just as our Governor, Commissioner, and State Board decided to substantially improve math and literacy teaching with the CC standards, we should look at the neighboring states of Mass. and NY who both rate in the upper tier- A, with their standards in American history.

Netflix is hands down the best deal going, and it has been a bargain for YEARS. I guess theRead More nonsensical whiners who complain about a long-delayed, $2 a MONTH increase are worried it will cost them a (partial) SINGLE LATTE. Utterly ridiculous.

TO MICHAEL BRENNICK: Leftist, Democra... WHAT? You think Comcast is part of the so-calledRead More "liberal" media (which, by the way, doesn't even exist)? Are you freakin' KIDDIN' me? FOR THOSE WHO LIKE AMAZON PRIME OVER NETFLIX: Here's an interesting article from today (23 Apr 2014)Read More about how Amazon Prime just got HBO to stream at least some of its older content, plus "HBO GO," to Amazon's new Fire TV box, thereby making NetFlix upset because NetFlix (nor any other streaming service, including HULU) has never been able to get any HBO content; and so Amazon has scored a real coup! I don't believe this kid is competent enough to make those decisions. Those kids need to beRead More prosecuted to the fullest and if the does judge does not agree he needs to step down.

Sorry, Autistic boy, but there are a multitude of crimes here. These so called 'friends' abused youRead More terribly ~ called 'bullying', & that alone cannot be tolerated. Then, there is animal cruelty involved, another terrible crime, plus, harassment of all kinds, leudness, & who knows what else. These 'friends' need to be charged & made aware of the seriousness of their deeds, punished accordingly & helped through proper mental councelling.

I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!! As far as the kid being a runaway..maybe he does face some serious abuse issues at home. He's damn lucky to be alive. But, I raised three boys, and a 16 year old boy can runaway for any collage of reasons. My kids never ran away but, I'm wondering if the fact that the plane was going to HAWAII has anything to do with it. It sounds a little compulsive to me. CPA need good follow up on this. Thank you lucky stars kid!

There are two separate issues here. The first and certainly the most obvious is security failure.Read More The second is to determine what is in the best interest of the teen, as well as the public.. He needs a psych eval, at the very least. Then again, so does most of the public.
