A bit of Sweden will be presented Friday by Atlanta's Nordic Lodge No. 708 with its traditional Santa Lucia celebration.
Traditional and contemporary Swedish Christmas music will be performed at 7:30 p.m. in the Winters Chapel United Methodist Church, located at 5105 Winters Chapel Road. [The church has free parking, but seating is limited.]
The concert features the St. Lucia Choir, with children, men and women from the Swedish community. Mia Peters will conduct the performance, with Gabriel Granitz accompanying the choir on piano.
According to Jan Rygert of the Nordic Lodge, the St. Lucia tradition is celebrated in Sweden and to some extent in other Scandanavian countries. A young Lucia wears a long, white gown with a red sash and a crown of lighted candles. She is attended by a group of singing attendants in festive holiday costumes. Saffron buns and gingersnaps would be offered by Lucia, as well as coffee, to everyone she saw on the morning of Dec. 13.
A reception will follow the celebration, featuring coffee and sweets in the church's Fellowship Hall.
Admission is free, but donations are welcomed.
