Five Things to Do This Weekend

Here's a local roundup of fun stuff going on around Dunwoody this weekend.

Five Things to Do This Weekend is a weekly feature on Dunwoody Patch where we sift through the long list of events competing for your time on the weekends and pick the best ones. So, check it out and go enjoy the weekend!

First rule of thumb this weekend. Be careful of the heat. Temperatures are expected to rise above 100 degrees Saturday and Sunday, which can be dangerous temperatures outdoors. Check out our guide for staying safe in these temperatures.

OK, now that you have you're hat and sunscreen - you want to hit a summer festival? Dunwoody's next door neighbor, Peachtree Corners, is having a two-day festival to celebrate their cityhood. July 1, in fact, will be their first day as a city. It runs all day Saturday and closes.

There's a 5K and 10K race, crafts, a juried art show, a car show, a parade, live music and a ceremony to commemorate cityhood.

You can stay inside in the air conditioning to see "Bat Mitzvah Comes of Age" a traveling exhibit at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta. The MJCCA exhibit focuses on how the coming of age ritual has changed to include girls in the last 90 years. It traces the stories of girls (and women) across Jewish groups and movements. The exhibit is from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Anyone for Canadian cuisine? The chef at Meehan's Public House in Sandy Springs will prepare a special menu starting 11 a.m. Saturday that includes Smoke Meat Poutine (chopped, smoked brisket with red wine gravy) and a Labatt's Steamed Lobster Tail and more.

Up for more fun? Teela Taqueria in Sandy Springs is holding an art class with cocktails. $30 gets you supplies to create your own coctail umbrellas. The cost of admission includes a margarita or martini. Check out the full details and register.

If you want to do for others this weekend, the Starbucks in Georgetown Shopping Center has teamed up with a non-profit to help the homeless. My Brothers Keeper Reaching Out, Inc. will deliver food to the homeless 11 a.m. Saturday.
