Dunwoody baseball claims top seed

Dunwoody closes out regular season play in 1st place

Dunwoody’s varsity baseball team came back strong after a spring break tournament in Florida to post a 2-1 record last week – tying for the Region 6-AAAA lead and drawing the number one seed in the re-draw tournament that starts this week.

Dunwoody’s 9-2 record in the region left them tied with Chamblee and Redan high schools. Dunwoody earned the top seed in re-draw play by virtue of beating both teams earlier in the season.  Dunwoody’s first game in re-draw play is against Chamblee on Wednesday.

The Wildcats (12-6 overall, 9-2 in Region 6-AAAA) started the week out Monday at home by crushing Carver High School by a score of 15-0.

Dunwoody recorded its first two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Two batters reached base. A wild pitch and then a sacrifice fly from Jared Martin pushed the lead to 2-0.

Carver would get their lone hit in the top of the 2nd inning off of Dunwoody's starting pitcher Logan Elliot.  Elliot recorded three strikeouts and Carver failed to score.

It didn’t take long for the Wildcats to break open the game. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Wildcats first eight batters reached base. Doubles by Zach Tonner and Chris Hale helped to bring in six runs.

It didn't end there. Stelen Stulberger ripped a triple to bring around Chris Hale. Jerric Johnson would bring home Stelen Stulberger and the inning closed with Dunwoody up 10-0.

The game ended on a walk-off double by Ryan Gaines to push the score to 15-0. Dunwoody won per the run rule.

Logan Elliot recorded the win from the mound. He pitched two innings, allowed just one hit, and struck out four batters.

Dunwoody vs. Lithonia

Dunwoody met Lithonia on Wednesday and the game was the Wildcats’ senior night. It turned out to be a good send off for the nine seniors on the team - who played the entire game. Dunwoody would shut out Lithonia 12-1.

Starting pitcher James Cunningham was the offensive and defensive star of the night. He started the first inning by putting down the Bulldog batters in order.

James Cunningham was the leadoff batter for the Wildcats and earned a walk. He would score after Jerric Jonhson hit a single up the middle.

Lithonia would issue three more walks in the inning. A Jonathon Rhoden single pushed the Wildcats’ lead to 5-0.

James Cunningham would get Dunwoody started in the bottom of the 2nd inning. He was again batted in by Jerric Johnson.

Chris Hale stole third base after a walk and scored when an errant throw from the catcher led to a passed ball. Dunwoody led 7-0 after the end of the 2nd inning.

Lithonia generated a little offense of its own in the 3rd inning. But it turned out to be their lone hit for the game. James Cunningham shut down any threat by giving up a sacrifice and issuing two strikeouts to close out the inning.

Dunwoody’s stellar play continued in the 3rd inning. Zach Tonner batted around Adam Julian. James Cunningham, an a 0-1 count, hit a homerun over the wall in left centerfield. The score at the end of the inning was 10-0.

In the 4th inning, every senior was moved to a new defensive position. James Farnell took over at the mound and put down Lithonia in order. He recorded all the outs himself, issuing two strikeouts and executing a comebacker to the pitcher.

James Cunningham would notch two RBIs after a double in the 4th inning scored Stelen Stulberger and Adam Julian. Dunwoody gave up one unearned run in the 5th inning but the game ended by the run rule after a pop up to shortstop Chris Hale.

Dunwoody vs. Southwest DeKalb

Dunwoody ended the week with a matchup against the Panthers of Southwest DeKalb. The Wildcats rival had only lost 4 games in the region, and all were close. With a win, Dunwoody would have taken sole possession of 1st place in the region.

It was not to be. Dunwoody lost 5-4 on the road.

Dunwoody led off with offense.  James Cunningham earned a walk and then advanced on a sacrifice from Charlie Madden. Jared Martin brought James Cunningham home on a single. The inning ended 1-0.

Pitcher Ryan Gaines gave up a leadoff walk for the Wildcats. He would put down the next three batters in order.

Dunwoody forced the issue in the next inning and generated some more offense. Stelen Stulberger walked on a 3-2 count with one out. James Farnell moved him to second on a fielding error. Stelen Stulberger scored after stealing third. An overthrow brought him home., and the score was 2-0.

The Panthers struck back in the 2nd inning. Marcus Hodge registered a hit. He was then moved over to second base on a bunt. He would score after Jason Davis hit a single in the hole between shortstop and third base. The Panthers edged close and the inning ended 2-1.

The game became a pitchers’ duel in the next three innings, with neither team scoring.

The Wildcats would come alive in the 6th inning after Jerric Johnson reached base on a walk with two outs. Pinch hitter Will Hudgins got a hit in the gap at second base, scoring Jerric Johnson to push the score to 3-1.

Southwest DeKalb responded in their half of the inning. With two outs, Keyonta Welch reached base on a single and then scored when Marcus Hodge reached base on an error. Marcus Hodge would tie the game after Christopher Ash ripped a double down the left field line. The score was 3-3.

In the top of the 7th inning, Dunwoody took back the lead. Charlie Madden hit a single. He was moved over on a bunt. The next batter, Chris Hale, walked. Harry Andros then ripped a single between third and shortstop to score Charlie Madden.

Southwest DeKalb, however, would have the final say. The leadoff batter got on base and was moved over on a bunt. The Panthers recorded another single. With runners on second and third base and two outs, Kelvin Wimbush laces a line drive up the middle to score both runners. The final score was 5-4, Southwest DeKalb.
