School News: Dunwoody Footballer Recognized, DES Celebrates Literacy

Dunwoody High School senior Jake Hudgins has been awarded a George Morris Scholar Athlete Scholarship.

Hudgins, who played linebacker and lineman, was one of 11 selected to receive this award. Selection is based on 40 percent academic; 40 percent athletic; and 20 percent extra circular activities.

Hudgins will be honored at a breakfast on Dec. 30 and again at the Chick-fil-A Bowl luncheon. At the luncheon, the recipients are recognized in front of the college players, coaches and fans as part of the Chick-fil-A Bowl, according to the Greater Atlanta Chapter of the National Football Foundation.

Each Georgia high school can nominate two football players and one student manager for the $1,000 scholarship. 

The Atlanta chapter has awarded more than $600,000 in scholarships since it was started in 1995.

 

Dunwoody Elementary's Literacy Day

 Right before the Thanksgiving break,  celebrated its first 'Literacy Day.' Students in grades pre K through 5 as well as teachers and administrators dressed as their favorite book character.The goal of the Literacy Day is for students to discuss and complete character study activities with their book and to become excited about reading, according to the school.  


Dunwoody Elementary's All Pro Dads
is a one hour monthly breakfast at  ( does one as well) held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During this time, they discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together and strengthen their relationships. The breakfast happens on the third Friday of each month from 6:45 to 7:20 a.m.  According to the district, the school has averaged around 200 dads and students for this event. 

 

Dunwoody Elementary canned food drive

is currently sponsoring a canned food drive, toy drive,
and drive for coats, scarves and gloves through its 4-H Club, sponsored by Carla Nugent, a teacher at the school. After taking care of any needs at
Dunwoody Elementary, these items will be distributed as follows: food
will be donated to Hosea Feed the Hungry; coats, scarves, and gloves
will be donated to Hosea Feed the Hungry and Kingswood Methodist Church;
the toys will be donated to the Dunwoody Police Department and Kingswood
Methodist Church to be distributed to needy families. Two families in
Dunwoody will be attending the party at Kingswood Methodist on Dec. 17,
sponsored by the Dekalb County social work department.
