School Board Reps to Talk School Budget in Dunwoody

Three representatives, including local board member Nancy Jester, will be at the Starbucks in Dunwoody Village 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.

The DeKalb County school board is facing a $73-million-dollar deficit for the upcoming school year, and painful cuts and a possible tax increase are on the table.

Increased class sizes, cuts to school personnel benefits, transportation to magnet schools, Montessori programs, the Fernbank Science Center, music programs and middle school athletics are all being considered.

So are increased taxes. Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson has proposed a $2 mill tax increase, which could raise $30 million for next years' budget - but would also make the district the most expensive for taxpayers in the metro area.
