Dunwoody Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Lambert

Wildcats drop first game to Lambert 15-5, win second game 3-2 on a passed ball

The Dunwoody High School baseball team split a doubleheader Wednesday night with Lambert High School, forcing a third game in the second round of the Class AAAA state playoffs.

The Wildcats dropped the first game to Lambert 15-5, but held a late rally in the second game, scoring the game winning run on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh.

“A win’s a win,” said Dunwoody Coach Chan English after the second game. “No matter if it’s passed balls or home runs, as long as the kids keep hustling and keep playing the game.”

Dunwoody came out swinging in the first inning of the first game, putting up four runs in the top half, but Lambert answered, scoring 8 runs in the bottom half of the inning – a lead they'd hold onto.

Dunwoody scored one more run in the top of the fourth, but it wasn’t enough. Lambert added two runs in the fourth and five more in the sixth, leading to the game being called early on the 10 run rule. Lambert took the game 15-5.

“They just came out and hit the ball,” said English.

The second game proved to be a pitchers duel, with Dunwoody's Logan Elliot and Lambert's Zack Schlosser tossing great games. Lambert struck first, with a run in the first, but Elliot settled down, putting zeros on the scoreboard for the next five innings.

“Logan came out in the second game and shut them down, in my opinion,” English said. “We battled. It was one of those games.”

Meanwhile, Dunwoody didn't record a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning. The Wildcats had chances, but couldn't convert with men on in the fifth and sixth innings.

In the top of the seventh, Lambert's first batter got on with a walk, made it to third on a passed ball and steal and scored on a sacrifice fly.

Dunwoody, down 2-0, scored three runs in the ninth –  all on missed catches and passed balls.

The first run scored with one out when the Lambert shortstop made the force out at second, but skipped the ball passed the first baseman and a runner scored from third.

The next run came on an errant throw from the catcher to the pitcher. The final run came on a passed ball.

"We’ve had two huge wins," English said. "The and then this one. Hopefully we can come out tomorrow and do something."

The doubleheader’s timing coincided with the Wildcat’s number one pitcher, Wes Bancroft having emergency surgery to remove his spleen. Bancroft had been scheduled to start the first game of the first round, but became ill. Wednesday, he underwent surgery.

“He’s a leader for us,” English said. “They were concerned, obviously, and they miss him, but they played through it.”

Lambert and Dunwoody will play game 3 this evening at 5:55 p.m. at Lambert High School. Tickets are $7.
