DeKalb Schools Layoff Staff

The district laid off more than 400 staff to execute a smaller budget for the upcoming school year.

More than 400 district staff for DeKalb schools were laid off Thursday, after the school board last week slashed nearly $79 million from the budget, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The move was not unexpected. Media clerks, interpreters, bus drivers will lose their jobs as was proposed in the budget, according to the report.

The cuts will save, in total, $16.9 million. More than 300 of the layoffs came directly from budget cuts. Another 70 came after a restructuring.

The layoffs didn't include teachers, according to the report. The district will hire fewer teachers this year as they voted to increase class sizes. More than 500 have retired, resigned or were fired this year, helping to stave off more teacher losses.
