DeKalb Schools Hit Budget Snafu

Spending plan assumed that teachers would leave or retire, instead layoffs are necessary.

Last month, the DeKalb County School board - after much hand wringing - made the difficult decision to make nearly $80 million in spending cuts.

But the board failed to follow through with the cuts that would have laid off employees this week, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Why? The cuts were based on $20.5 million in salary and benefits for teachers that were expected to retire or leave the district. That hasn't happened, according to the report.

One of the board's biggest money savers in this year's was to increase class sizes, which means reducing the number of teachers.

Board member Eugene Walker said that teachers had already turned in signed contracts for the fall, and wouldn't vote to pull that out from under people.

The board will reconvene today at 10 a.m in Stone Mountain to attempt a resolution.
