Murphey Candler Residents Complain Of Solicitations From Sanitation Workers

Some residents are fearful of retaliation.

Several residents of a neighboring community are complaining that DeKalb sanitation workers solicited tips from them, and threatened to return to their homes if the homeowners didn't pony up.

CBS Atlanta reported late Tuesday evening that some DeKalb Sanitation workers allegedly approached the Murphey Candler homes, asking residents for gift cards or tips as holiday gifts.

One resident told the station that a worker said, "I think you guys missed me on Christmas."

"I told him, my wife takes care of that, and then he more or less said, ‘We'll be back next week. Put the donation underneath the mat or we will pick it up,'" the homeowner told the station.

Murphey Candler sits to the north of Dunwoody's new sister city of Brookhaven.

Another resident complained that two workers who collect her recyclables also asked for money.

DeKalb spokesman Burke Brennan said the county is aware of the complaints, and that one employee has been assigned to another route while the investigation continues.

The station quoted Brennan as saying, "If the allegations prove true, we will take immediate corrective personnel action."
