Governor's Grant to PCIDs Benefits Sandy Springs Commuters, Medical Center

A $1 million grant to the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts was one of 12 awarded to Metro Atlanta CIDs for transportation infrastructure projects.

Gov. Nathan Deal on Thursday awarded a $1 million Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank grant to the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts for Lake Hearn Drive and Peachtree Dunwoody Road streetscape and intersection improvements.

The PCIDs’ grant was one of 12 awarded to Metro Atlanta CIDs for transportation infrastructure projects totaling more than $8 million.

“We were pleased to be a top level grant recipient in the GTIB grant program for CIDs,” said Yvonne Williams, president and CEO of the PCIDs, during a news announcement on the grant at the Georgia State Capitol.

“This grant will be used for preliminary engineering, design and right-of-way acquisition to make roadway, pedestrian and bicycle improvements that will complete the full system of transportation improvements from Ashford Dunwoody Road and I-285 to the Hammond Half-Diamond Interchange at Ga. 400,” Williams added.

Chuck Altimari, UPS vice president and chaor of the Fulton Perimeter CIDS said, “The project also will make transit more accessible and encourage increased use of the nearby Medical Center and Dunwoody MARTA Stations.”

In a press release, Gov. Deal said the grant will help communities move their projects forward and create job opportunities.

Williams noted that this was the second GTIB grant awarded to the PCIDs. The organization received $800,000 in the first round of grant awards in 2010 to help with design and engineering for Georgia’s first Diverging Diamond Interchange at I-285 and Ashford Dunwoody Road.

Lt. Governor Casey Cagle, who participated in today’s grant announcement, noted the leadership role that Williams and others played in initiating the GTIB grant program for CIDs through SRTA. The grant program helps advance projects with the private sector throughout the Metro Atlanta area, Cagle said.
