School Crossing Guards Honored by Gov. Deal

March 6, 2013, has been named School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.

School crossings have been in Dunwoody's news a lot lately, chiefly because of an incident in February in which a crossing guard pulled City Councilman John Heneghan's son out of the way of a speeding truck.

This past week, Gov. Nathan Deal was joined by Dunwoody state rep. Tom Taylor, Heneghan, Dunwoody Elementary crossing guard Larry Adams and others to announce that Wednesday, March 6, is Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.

Heneghan's Dunwoody Blog reports that Wednesday, March 6th, is also "Georgia Walk to School Day."

Each of Dunwoody's elementary schools - Austin, Chesnut, Dunwoody Elementary, Kingsley and Vanderlyn - will be hosting a walk/bike to school event on this day as part of its walk to school program. The schools are also competing for "The Golden Sneaker of Dunwoody" award, given to the school with the highest percentage of walkers.
