DeKalb County Budget Review Meeting Next Tuesday

Meeting, hosted by Elaine Boyer, will be held at Montgomery Elementary School

DeKalb County Commissioner Elaine Boyer is hosting two public hearings on the county's 2011 budget, including a meeting at Montgomery Elementary next Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Boyer's meeting will focus on the draft $563 million budget for 2011, along with the proposal from DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis for a 2.32 millage rate increase, according to a press release from Boyer's office. A budget will likely be adopted by March 1.

“I really would like to hear what the public thinks of this spending plan,” Boyer said, in the press release. “I don’t believe they can afford a tax increase. But we need citizen input on what they would like to see cut from the county budget.”

The county is also anticipating at $12.8 million drop in revenue due to the economy, the release said.

“Right now, the Commission is evaluating the proper role of county government,” Boyer said. “I don’t believe the county can solve all of society’s ills. We must only provide basic services such as public safety, police, fire and the courts. Everything else is on the table to be cut. However, I would like to know what my constituents think. That’s why I hope they will turn out for these important hearings.”
