Deal Increases Campaign War Chest
The governor easily outdistanced his two Republican primary challengers in fundraising during the first quarter of the year.
The campaign war chest for Gov. Nathan Deal increased by more than $400,000 during the first quarter of 2014, eclipsing his Republican primary opponents, who each brought in less than $100,000 during the same period.
The Atlanta Business Chronicle reports that Deal received $403,877 in contributions between Jan. 1 and Jan. 14, the first day of this year’s legislative session, and between the end of the session March 20 and the last day of March.
Georgia law forbids candidates from raising money when the General Assembly is under way.

Former Dalton Mayor David Pennington raised $72,027 in the first quarter, and Georgia School Superintendent John Barge brought in $39,353, according to the business publication.
The GOP primary is May 20, with the winner taking on Democratic state Sen. Jason Carter in November.

As of March 31, the Deal campaign had amassed $3.9 million, compared to $208,466 for Pennington and $15,914 for Barge.
