Coyote Sighting Increase in Dunwoody: Here's What to Do

Coyote sightings are on the increase in Dunwoody, and city officials are offering tips that can keep the animals away from homes.

It is important for residents to know the steps they can take to protect themselves, their families and pets in the event they encounter a coyote. Coyotes are generally frighted of humans and will avoid contact when possible. However, small domesticated pets like cats, small dogs, and rabbits can be considered prey and are at increased risk.

Prevention is the best defense against coyotes.

If a coyote is suspected in an area where domestic animals are roaming free, several precautions can be made to ensure their safety: 

• Bring pets indoors at night, as this is the coyote’s primary hunting time.
• If a pet must be kept outside, install fencing and motion-activated floodlights to discourage predators.
• Clean and store grills when not in use.
• Keep pet food indoors, or feed your pet indoors, and refill bird feeders in small amounts.
• Keep trash can lids securely fastened, or store trash cans in a secured location.
