Construction dirt to be hauled to Brook Run Park

Contractor will not disturb the park on weekends

The city has issued a permit to a local contractor to haul dirt from the Chamblee High School construction site to Brook Run Park, after neighbors complained about heavy trucks hauling it to a residential lot in Dunwoody.

Based on the complaints, city officials effectively switched out a permit to dump the dirt at a residence on Glaze Drive for one in Brook Run Park.

City officials said that the dirt hauling would not take place during the weekends, when people are using the park.

However, there is a substantial amount of dirt that will be hauled to the 100-acre, public park. An estimated 1,700 cubic yards will be dumped at Brook Run Park, which equals 170 trips with a dual-tandem dump truck, according to the city's engineering department.

The good news is that the park can use the dirt that's being hauled from the Chamblee High School construction site and "the contractor basically will deliver that," said Richard Edinger, a city engineer.

It's not clear exactly how long the contractor will take to bring the dirt to Brook Run Park. The contractor is also using a private site to dump the dirt. The site is a cemetery off of Winters Chapel Road.

The city's engineering department is waiting on a test of the soil to see if it is contaminated before giving the green light that the dirt can be dumped in the park. The test had been performed Wednesday, but the results had not come back yet, Edinger said.
