City Council Preview: Home Businesses, Walmart Grocery, Paving Plans

A preview to the council meeting for Monday, Jan. 9

Dunwoody’s new-look city council will get to work Monday, taking on several policy issues, including home business regulations, the 2012 plans for paving and sidewalks, and an intergovernmental agreement for a new Walmart grocery store.

It appears plans for new grocery store on Dunwoody's east side are moving forward.

Walmart Markets, a smaller grocery-centered store than the typical Walmart, is looking to open a store at 5025 Winters Chapel Rd. The store building would be located in Gwinnett County, while parking would be in Dunwoody.

In order to get the project underway, the Dunwoody City Council, along with the Gwinnett County Board will have to sign an inter-governmental agreement that lays out how permitting, zoning and other issues related to the development would be handled.

Gwinnett began working with the developer on the project last fall. The county received the development case for the project on Oct. 4.

There are about 167 Walmart Markets across the country. In the Atlanta area, a Market was opened in Snellville and there are plans to open one in Marietta.

Home Businesses

After an in-home music teacher’s well-publicized, red-tape laden trip through the city’s home business permit process, it appears new amendments are on the way to smooth the procedure.

The council will hear Monday about text amendments, initiated by former Council member Danny Ross, that would relax the restrictions on home occupations.

2012 Paving List

The $2.5 million paving plan for 2012 will be discussed by the council.

The plan includes portions of Ashford Center Parkway, Chamblee Dunwoody Road (from Peeler to Nerine Circle), Mount Vernon Road (from West City Limit to Ashford Dunwoody), porjects on Perimeter Center East and Place, and many residential paving projects. A full list can be found here and a map of the projects here.

The council will also…

• discuss branding for the Georgetown/North Shallowford area.
