Two Dunwoody Police Officers Promoted into Sergeant Positions

Officers William 'Rusty' Furman and Fidel Espinoza, both active in the community, take on a new ranking in Dunwoody's Police Department

 Two of Dunwoody’s finest have risen in the ranks in the city’s Police Department.

Officers William ‘Rusty’ Furman and Fidel Espinoza were promoted to Sergeant Tuesday by Police Chief Billy Grogan.

“Both Officer Rusty Furman and Officer Fidel Espinoza are great examples of the best of the Dunwoody Police Department,” said Grogan, in a press release. “Each excelled throughout the promotional process and I am confident that both of them will become exceptional leaders for our department. They are dedicated public servants committed to strengthening the relationship of the department with the community as well as the professional development of our staff.”

Furman is a 13-year police veteran, who worked with the Cobb County Police Department before coming to Dunwoody, according to the department. He’s been a community outreach officer and was key in starting the Dunwoody Police Explorer Unit.

Furman worked closely with Special Olympics Georgia, including organizing the First Annual Special Olympics Car Show in Dunwoody, which raised more than $5,000. He was named 2010 Public Safety Champion by the DeKalb Police Alliance, according to the Dunwoody Police Department.

Espinoza came from the DeKalb County Police Department, and has been working as a uniformed patrol officer since the Dunwoody department started.

He’s been active in the community, organizing the annual ‘’ event the last two winters. He’s also an active field training officer, according to the department. He was named the DeKalb Police Officer of the Year by the DeKalb County Bar Association in 2010.

Both officers instructed a local drug and alcohol awareness program from eighth graders at Peachtree Charter Middle School.
