New DeKalb Fire Chief Topped More Than 100 Applicants

Darnell Fullum will take over the top spot next month.

By Kevin Madigan

After reviewing more than a hundred applicants, DeKalb County officials have picked the man who will head its fire department.

Darnell Fullum, one of two finalists, has accepted an offer to become fire chief, it was announced during a press conference at Fire Rescue Headquarters in Tucker Monday morning.

"He came highly recommended," DeKalb Interim CEO Lee May said. "His commitment will play a significant role in the future of this county," Police Chief Cedric Alexander added.

Fullum, 49, has been with the Fulton County Fire Department for 26 years. He is married and has a 12-year-old son. "I'm happy with the outcome, obviously. I want to hit the ground running," he told reporters. "I see myself (in this role) for the next ten years."

May said Fullum will step into his new post in about 30 days.
