Masked Men Rob Dunwoody Bank

The men fired two shots into the ceiling during the robbery of a Chase Bank branch.

Two men robbed the Chase branch at 5552 Chamblee Dunwoody Rd. Friday morning, just after 11 a.m., Dunwoody Police say, shooting into the bank ceiling twice as they fled.

Gina Sapwivun was getting ready for the midday lunch rush at Singha Thai next door when she heard a loud thud come through the wall.

“It sounded like something just dropped,” the restaurant manager said. Right away thought the bank was being robbed  – something that occurred twice before in the past few years. “We thought ‘Oh my God,’ the bank is getting robbed.”

“It’s scary,” she said. “This is the third time this has happened.”

The men came into the bank at approximately 11:15 a.m., Friday both with what appeared to be towels wrapped around their heads, one with a gun and another with a garbage bag.

The men demanded cash and ordered everyone in the bank on the ground, police said. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported there were about eight customers in the bank at the time.

One of the men shot into the ceiling twice, but nobody was injured during the incident.

The men fled the scene in a silver 2002 Mitsubishi Galant with Georgia license plate BUV 2115. The headed northbound on Chamblee Dunwoody Road.

The suspects came into the bank with items on their head – one wore a white towel and the other a black towel.

Their vehicle was apparently stolen during a car jacking earlier in the day in Sandy Springs.

A witness, who asked that his name not be used, came just seconds after the men fled. He said the suspects dropped the black garbage bag in the parking lot on the side of the bank.

When the first police officer arrived, they asked him to keep an eye on the bag as they taped off the scene.

He said the bag didn’t appear to be empty, but said he didn’t touch it.

Anyone who sees the two men is asked to contact 911 immediately. The two are considered armed and dangerous, police said.

Anyone with information should contact Det. Andrew Thompson at 678-382-6921 or Andrew.thompson@dunwoodyga.gov.
