Man Darting in and Out of I-285 Traffic Arrested After Biting Police Officer

The man, who has yet to be identified, caused a traffic jam around 4:30 p.m.

Drivers on I-285 got more than bumper to bumper traffic Tuesday afternoon.

Police say a barefoot man carrying a large stick was seen darting in and out of traffic on 285, between Ashford Dunwoody Road and Peachford Dunwoody Road around 4:30 p.m.

Police received numerous calls on the man, later identified as Andre Thelwell, 22, of Conyers. When they arrived, they man ran onto 285, going across all of the east bound lanes, jumping the median and coming to a stop in the westbound lanes.

Officers confronted him on the westbound side. When they tried to arrest the man, he put up a struggle and bit a Sandy Springs officer. A Dunwoody Police officer used his Taser on the man.

The officer was treated and released from the hospital.

The man was taken into custody and taken to Grady Hospital.

He was arrested by Dunwoody Police on several charges, including felony aggravated assault, felony obstruction and pedestrian on a highway, a misdemeanor. 

Both Sandy Springs and Dunwoody Police responded to the incident.
