Guy With Gun Demands To See Permit Of Another Guy With Gun

Two Georgia gas station customers carrying holstered weapons had a showdown that led to one man drawing his gun and demanding the carry permit of the other.

No shots were fired, but one man was arrested for disorderly conduct.

Police were called to an Enmark convenience store when a man carrying a holstered firearm entered the store. Another customer, also with a holstered firearm, demanded to see the man’s identification and firearms license.

The customer reportedly demanding the license was identified as Ronald Williams, 62. Police say he pulled his firearm from its holster but didn’t point it at the other customer. The other man replied that he did not have to show a permit or identification, according to the newspaper. With that, he made his purchase, left the store and called police.

Williams was charged with disorderly conduct for drawing his weapon inside of the store, police said, and his gun was confiscated.

Valdosta Police Chief Brian Childress said Georgians — including law enforcement officers — cannot demand to see someone’s firearms permit, and he blamed the incident on Georgia's new gun law, which went into effect Tuesday.

“This is an example of my concern with the new gun law, that people will take the law into their own hands which we will not tolerate,” Childress told The Valdosta Daily Times.

As of July 1, House Bill 60 (the Safe Carry Protection Act) allows licensed gun owners to bring guns into a variety of places formerly barred. There are a number of rules, requirements and exceptions included in the text of the bill – churches, for example, may decide on an individual basis whether that church will allow guns inside.
