Updated: Dunwoody's Population Climbs About 20 Percent Through the Decade

U.S. Census data shows 41 percent growth from 2000 to 2010, but a change in boundaries for the Dunwoody area pushes

Dunwoody's population increased to 46,267 between 2000 and 2010, according to new U.S. Census data.

The data, however, also shows the city's population being 32,287 in 2000. While the city's population has increased, it didn't jump that much.

While Dunwoody was incorporated after the last official census, it was a Census-designated place in 2000. That area's population was 32,808 in 2000.

City Councilman Robert Wittenstein said the actual population in 2000, within the current borders, was 38,740, which would mean a 19 percent jump in population over the last decade.

In 2000, the southeast corner of the city, near the the DeKalb County Water plant, was not counted in Census designated place borders for Dunwoody, according to Wittenstein.

Still, a 19 percent growth in population since 2000 is a large increase.

"It's very healthy," Wittenstein said.

The growth, in part, was due to a great amount of residential developent in the early 2000s by DeKalb County. The county allowed a large number of low rise apartment buildings to be put up throughout the city prior to the city's incorporation.

"Any attempt to slow growth down was an uphill battle," Wittenstein said.

It was one of the reasons for the push for a city.

"We can control how much high density growth we can allow through our zoning ordinances," he said. "I would be very surprised if we allowed the same level of growth in the coming decade that DeKalb County allowed before incorporation."

With 46,267 people residing in its city limits, Dunwoody is now Georgia’s 16th most populous incorporated area.

In 2010, 32,287 residents are identified as white, according to the bureau, while African Americans and Asians are numbered at 5,851 and 5,153, respectively. A total of 4,755 Latinos live in Dunwoody as well.

Georgia’s largest county is Fulton, with a population of 920,581. Its population grew by 12.8 percent since 2000. The other top metro counties include Gwinnett, with a population of 805,321 (increase of 36.9 percent); DeKalb, 691,893 (increase of 3.9 percent); and Cobb, 688,078 (increase of 13.2 percent).
