Christianity: A "Blind" Faith? (Reasonable Belief part 1)

Is the Christian faith a "blind" faith, or are there good, solid reasons to hold the beliefs that we do? Hopefully we can answer this question together over a series of articles on some of the foundations of the Christian faith.

As a Christian, circumstances that have come to fruition in my life over the last several years have constrained me to take a closer look at my belief system and my worldview. Before that time, I had theological knowledge of what I believed and could reason Biblically for my belief, but I only had vague understandings and high school memories of scientific theories. Even though I used logic in my thought processes (we all do) my understanding of the subject of logic was what I had gleaned from watching Mr. Spock on Star Trek. I basically had no defense for the attacks on Christianity that have been mounted by the likes of Richard Dawkins (author of the wildly popular "God Delusion" and other books) and other prominent atheists.

I learned that there were many reasonable sounding and widely popular attacks on the Christian faith. For instance, have you heard that it is widely believed that Jesus is a conglomeration of prior mythologies? It has been put forth that the authors of the New Testament borrowed the idea of Jesus' virgin birth, December 25th birth date, twelve disciples, miracles, crucifixion, and resurrection from astrological sources and ancient pagan mystery religions that were around long before the time of Christ. I had no answer for this. I had no answer for a "universe from nothing" via the Big Bang, or for the theory of Darwinian "from mud to man" evolution other than it just didn't sound right to me, and it contradicted what I read in the first chapter of Genesis.

I had been caught flat-footed and embarrassed by these and other questions for which I had no defense. I had failed to follow the advice given in 1 Peter 3:15-"...and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you...". This failure caused me to begin to look in to these subjects and to see if there were sound answers to them that could be reconciled to the Christian worldview. Honestly I was afraid of what I might find. I was afraid there would be no good answers and that all I had was "blind faith".

It's been an interesting journey. Have you ever questioned whether or not your faith in God is reasonable? If it can be grounded in reality and not just spirituality? I hope, over a series of several blog posts, to be able to explore the answers to the many questions raised by those skeptical of our faith, and hopefully we can find out together whether or not the Christian faith has any foundation other than "blind" faith.
