I-285 near Dunwoody will be a traffic jam

State road crews will be working this weekend on westbound route

Some of the worst traffic backups in metro Atlanta will be in and around Dunwoody this weekend, according to state transportation officials.

Three lanes will be closed for bridge-joint repairs on I-285 westbound around the exit for Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

Last weekend, the lane closures created bumper-to-bumper traffic on the westbound portion of the Interstate from the I-85 junction to the exit for Ashford Dunwoody Road even during times of light traffic.

The construction will begin 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.

State transportation officials say motorists should plan alternate routes to avoid the construction.

“We expect the worst delays to be on I-285 near Peachtree Industrial Boulevard,” said Lee Upkins, district construction engineer. “Any time we have to close three lanes on any interstate around Atlanta, traffic backs up significantly.  We recommend that motorists use alternate routes if possible.”

Also, look out for a construction delay inside one of Dunwoody’s main intersections from 7 a.m. until possibly late in the evening Saturday, Dunwoody Police reported.

The city’s public works department will be closing Mt. Vernon Road near Dunwoody Baptist Church to work on a pipe.

Local traffic only will be allowed from Ashford Dunwoody Road to Abernathy Road along Mt. Vernon Road. Only residents will be able to use that stretch. Other are being asked to find an alternate route.
