Great Escape: American Craft Beer Week

This week is dedicated to American Craft Beers. Let's drink to that!

In honor of the more than 1700 small and independent craft brewers in the U.S. and in thanksgiving for the high-quality and delicious beer they produce, this week, May 16- 22, 2001, has been deemed, by Congress and the Brewer’s Association, to be American Craft Beer Week.

Condensed from a month-long celebration to a week-long one in 2006, this is the first year the tastings, festivals and beer-pairing dinners have reached all 50 states. The celebrations are alive and well in Georgia, so raise your stein and fill it with American craft beers this week!

Craft Beer Events
Check the official calendar of event listings here and be sure to stop by Taco Mac Perimeter Place on Thursday night for Pint Night. Order any one of their three beers of the month and get a free pint glass.

Local Breweries
Though American Craft Beer Week includes craft beers throughout the whole country, why not take the opportunity to support our local Georgia breweries? Visit the breweries to see where the magic happens or know what to try next time you sit down at Dunwoody Tavern or cruise the beer aisles at Total Wine.

  • Red Brick Brewing (Formerly Atlanta Brewing Company) Brewery tours & tastings are held every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Special beers, like the Double IPA, Old Grandma cask, are promised to be on tap in celebration of this week.
  • Jailhouse Brewing Company Jailhouse began selling their beer, brewed in an old Hampton, Georgia Jailhouse, in the fall of 2009. They now have their standbys of Slammer Wheat, Breakout Stout and Mugshot IPA with brewery tours and tasting at 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
  • SweetWater Brewing Every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., SweetWater opens its doors and its taps to the public. This week, join SweetWater at the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeepers’ River Revival on Thursday for 6:30 to 11:00 p.m. at Park Tavern at Piedmont Park. Be on the lookout for the special release Waterkeeper Hefeweizen Ale benefiting the Waterkeeper Alliance.
  • Terrapin Beer Company Located just a short drive in Athens, Georgia, Terrapin beers are readily available on tap and in bottles, with many special Terrapin brews being tapped at Atlanta beer events this week.
  • Wild Heaven Craft Beers: Georgia’s newest brewery is so new that its location in Decatur is set to open in 2013. Currently being contract brewed in North Carolina, Wild Heaven’s Ode to Mercy and Invocation ales are available on tap at Taco Mac Perimeter Place and the new 4-pack of their beer in bottles is now available at Total Wine and Whole Foods.

Cheers!
