Charity Group Hosting Sunday Bash for 'Nifty Nineties' Residents at Mount Vernon Towers

This will be the eighth year the National Charity League's Dunwoody Chapter hosts a party at Mount Vernon Towers in Sandy Springs.

A resident group at Mount Vernon Towers independent senior community in Sandy Springs and the National Charity League's Dunwoody Chapter are having a party on Sunday afternoon.

An announcement said members of the National Charity League will host a Mad Hatter Tea Party to celebrate a vibrant group of residents, 90 years and older, who live at Mount Vernon Towers. They're called the ‘Nifty Nineties.’

Maureen Jensen, president of group, said they get together monthly to socialize, laugh, and share memories and experiences. “We have great fun together, and we have become close friends here at Mount Vernon Towers since we all agree with what Doris Lessing once said: ‘The great secret that all old people share is that you really haven't changed in 70 or 80 years. Your body changes, but you don't change at all,’ ” Jensen said.

This will be the eighth year the NCL – Dunwoody Chapter is hosting a tea party at Mount Vernon Towers. They are a mother-daughter organization dedicated to fostering the mother-daughter relationship through community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. The chapter consists of mothers and their daughters in grades seven through 12 that each serves at least 20 philanthropic hours per year.

“Our goal is to promote a sense of community responsibility in our daughters and being part of the National Charity League gives us many opportunities to do things together and volunteer,” said member Felicia Borreson. “This year we are planning a real Mad Hatter Tea Party – there will be fabulous costumes (generously on loan from Wesleyan School), fun entertainment by the girls, and of course, we’re bringing some great tea party food. Everyone will be wearing a ‘mad hat’ or, as the invitation says, ‘it’s off with your head!’
