Popular Retailer Withdraws Some Weapon Sales
Question of The Day: Wal-Mart and Dick's Sporting Goods have responded to the Newton, Conn. school shooting. Is it the beginning of a shift in attitudes towards guns?
In the wake of the school shootings in Newton, Conn. some area retailers are responding to the controversy by pulling the sale of some "modern rifles" off the shelves and off of websites.
Dick's Sporting Goods made news Wednesday by not selling what it calls "modern rifles" - locally located in Buckhead, Norcross, Alpharetta and Kennesaw.
The retailer did not disclose how long they would not offer the rifles, according to the Washington Post.
The Post also reported that Wal-Mart has pulled the Bushmaster assault-type rifle used in the shooting was from its website. Although the guns are sold only at retail outlets - including one on Ashford Dunwoody Road, the Bushmaster's advertising presence on the website was removed.
A company spokesman could not be reached for comment in Wal-Mart's case.
Is this the beginning of a shift on gun sales or a temporary public relations move? Should guns be available at popular retailers.
