Plantation South Dunwoody to host forum on veterans' care

The informational session will focus on benefits that can be overlooked.

An assisted-living facility in Dunwoody will host an informational session on a veterans' benefit that's often overlooked.

Plantation South Dunwoody, a senior-living, assisted-care facility, has scheduled the session for the senior benefit at 9:30 a.m. April 28 at 4954 Barclay Dr. The session is open to veterans who may qualify for the benefit and their caregivers.

The benefit is available through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Called “Aid in Attendance,” it’s designed to help veterans and their spouses help pay for rent in assisted living communities. The benfit isn’t new, but many people who are eligible for it are not aware of it, said officials at Plantation Dunwoody.

Veterans may qualify for up to $1,704 per month and surviving spouses could qualify $1,094 per month to assist with rent in an assisted care facility. For a couple, the benefit tallies to $2,020.

“For these caregivers who are no longer able to provide the quality of care their loved ones need, the Aid and Attendance benefit can assist them in affording high-quality care,” says Yonnie Stevens, executive director of Plantation South Dunwoody.

Studies show that the benefit can be helpful to overworked caregivers. According to the National Alliance for Caregivers, veterans are twice as likely to remain with a caregiver for 10 years or longer, and are often unable to retain a job while providing adequate care.
