Off-Duty Officer Assaulted at Brook Run Dog Park

A Good Samaritan had to stop one of the men from seriously hurting the officer.

Dunwoody Police officers were called to the popular Brook Run Dog Park Saturday after an out-of-control park-goer fought with an off-duty DeKalb police officer who was trying to control the situation, according to police.

When police arrived they would arrest a man who assualted an off-duty officer by pinning her to the ground after a fight with another park goer.

The incident started when a man, identified as David Dawson by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, was involved in some verbal sparring with another park goer.

The fight drew the attention of an off-duty DeKalb police officer who was in the park and tried to calm down the argument.

The man then pushed the officer, who then tried to arrest him and then a fight occurred, say police. The suspect throw the officer to the ground, pinned her and then put his knee on her throat.

The Dekalb officer told police she was close to passing out when another park goer intervened and stopped the assault.

Both the suspect and the officer suffered minor injuries. The suspect was arrested.

It's not known at this time what Dawson is being charged with.

The officer must have bullied him physically (and possibly abused her legal position). I would like to hear more detail about the story leading up to his actions, because I am positive it would show a different perspective.

Mik remember that when you or a family member are being assaulted by a gang of perps, the officer is always wrong and abusing her authority. I guess in your dim-witted view she should have just let Dawson beat the hell out of the other park goer. You're the sort of ungrateful cretin that makes policing so difficult.

Michael Caldwell, Dawson wasn't touching another park goer, they were talking about dog care when the off duty policewoman jumped in. He wasn't going to touch anyone so your argument is invalid. He has been going to that park for years (as said by the park owner), and he hasn't 'beat the hell' out of anyone at that park.

That is not what the story reported Rose. Dawson was obviously the aggressor. You can assault someone by threatening them even without touching them. If you re-read my post I didn't say Dawson was beating the other guy. The officer tried to separate the two so that the battery would not happen. She was right. He was wrong, and he will pay. And by the way, I believe we are the park owners .

Do you have short term memory problems? You said IN YOUR POST, 'she should have just let Dawson beat the hell out of the other park goer.' He didn't touch the other park goer. Police have been known to lie about their starting actions. Were you there? Verbal abuse does not warrant physical abuse.

There's nothing wrong with vigorous debate. There is a lot wrong with profanity on an open website. You guys have been warned. It is against the terms of service. Keep it clean.

Dawson has two previous assault cases against him for his verbal attacks of others while in the dog park. The officer clearly identified herself. Dawson shoved her. She issued a verbal warning to him to leave. He shoved her again. She attempted to arrest him. He threw her to the ground and crushed her air supply with his knee to the point where she almost passed out. Another park visited told David to get off. He did not comply. He then knocked Dawson off with one solid, well-aimed punch.

Hopefully this will be the impetus to ban David Dawson from the park. He has shown himself to be a danger to others. Saturday, he crossed the line from verbal to the type of threat that we all should be concerned about.

Fred's description of the events were incorrect. Dawson did not shove the officer initially, she shoved him first.
