Update: Dunwoody Police Sgt. Jason Dove Involved in Traffic Shooting
A Marietta man was killed by a Dunwoody police officer after a chase.
Posted at 1:42 PM - An eyewitness to last night's chase that led to the shooting of a 34-year-old Marietta man by Dunwoody Police told Dunwoody Patch her account, which is in line with an official statement by police.
The eyewitness, who didn't want to be named, was driving near the Ashford Dunwoody and Meadow Lane intersection on the way home from an appointment at the hospital around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night.
As she waited at the intersection with her 6-year-old child, she saw blue lights in her rearview mirror - and then a minvan driving recklessly with a white male inside.
Cars on congested Ashford Dunwoody headed to Mt. Vernon parted for the chase. The eyewitness said she was able to get in the turn lane near Spruill Gallery to get out of the way.
"I noticed a bunch of blue lights. There were a lot of blue lights that came up behind me," said the eyewitness. "He was right in front of them."
The brown minivan the man was driving made a U-turn at the intersection, according to the eyewitness, possibly to avoid the sluggish traffic headed to Mt. Vernon Road.
The man who was killed, identified Thursday by police as Bradley Almy was headed to the Perimeter Center East intersection, where he was shot by Sgt. Jason Dove, a police officer with Dunwoody Police since the department's inception in spring 2009.
Dove shot Bradley Almy late Wednesday afternoon after a chase that started near City Hall ended near Ashford Dunwoody Road and Perimeter Center East, just one intersection down from where the eyewitness saw the chase.
Police did not give details on why the man may have come to City Hall, which is also the home of the police department.
Police say that two uniformed officers on foot - who was guiding heavy traffic at nearby crosswalks - approached the reckless vehicle near the Ashford Dunwoody and Perimeter Center East intersection to prevent Almy from fleeing.
Almy then allegedly rammed several vehicles, which police say he did repeatedly throughout the chase.
"Fearing for the safety of the motoring public, pedestrians and the officer’s safety, an officer fired one shot at the suspect," the department's official statement said. "The suspect struck additional cars and was able to continue through traffic and turned onto Perimeter Center East."
Almy drove less than a mile to the Savannah Park apartment complex where the chase ended after he hit a utility pole, police say. Savannah Park Apartments is one of a number of apartment complexes near City Hall and other office buildings.
"Officers immediately detained the suspect and rendered first aid until DeKalb Fire/EMS arrived on scene," according to the statement. "The suspect was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for emergency care where he was subsequently pronounced deceased."
Dove has been put on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting, say police.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in on the authorization of Police Chief Billy Grogan and was on scene last night, according to a GBI spokesman.
GBI collects facts and interviews people that saw the shooting, including other officers, and the file is sent to the district attorney's office for adjudication. Most reports take several months, said John Bankhead, spokesman for the bureau.
The Dunwoody Police Department said it would not comment further on the incident while the investigation continues.

The vehicle ended up parked right outside of my first floor bedroom window (The Savannah and Park Place apartments) along with tons of police cars with all the flashing blue lights. I think the officers could have provided more information to us concerned residents other than there was a shooting. I had to wait to find out on the 11pm news that there wasn't a suspect on the loose so I could finally go to sleep.

I was 3 cars up from where the suspect was shot. It was very obvious witnessing the events unfold that he had no concern for anyone and in my opinion, he got what he deserved!

You’re talking about the police had no concern for the public at large. The DPD made a small incident (making an illegal turn) and raised it to murder. The DPD put 1000’s of people as risk chasing and shooting this man in most crowned place in town. We are just lucky that other people didn’t get killed. Question, how much is this going to cost us (the tax payers of Dunwoody)?

It is so easy to distance oneself from the situation with judgment, but Brad was a loving father and husband regardless of his DUI. We cannot know what was going on in his mind at the time, and it is not our place to do so. Saying he got what he deserved when his three children will go fatherless is heartless.

I know, regardless of your opinion, I feel for his family, he had triplets, that cant be much older than 4. I knew Brad over the years, he never struck me as a person that could have done this willingly. Who knows what happened, I had not talked to him for some time, but I do remember he had some health issues, and I could be wrong, but if I recall correctly, he battled a brain tumor for some time. RIP Brad.

I'll put my name, Billy Wells, on there. Brad was my brother, and never hurt anyone (emotionally or physically) prior to this event. Something happened, that we'll probably never know, that set these events in motion. Strokes, physchotic breaks, aneurysms, etc. don't always come with warning or precursors. I loved this man very much and am very sad to lose him. I'm sure everyone on this board knows someone who has driven drunk before; just because Brad was arrested for the same doesn't make him a monster or deserving of this fate. Check yourself before you start attacking others and placing blame where it may not belong.

Brad is my neighbor. I've known many people and family who have had a DUI in the past. I know many people, again family included, who are recovering. A prior DUI does not make you "...a disturbed individual." Brad was a loving father with a great family. He was a good neighbor always willing to lend a hand. When another neighbors tree fell across the road in a storm, Brad not only cleared the road, he cut up the tree. We'll never know exactly what happened, but he did not deserve to be shot to death. I was not at the even. I did see some of the car "scrape" damage on TV. I find it hard to believe that a police officer would find it necessary to use deadly force to stop a reckless driver.

Personally, I think for people to say that a person deserves to die or got what he deserves without knowing the circumstances are cruel and uncivilized. Who are they to decide who should live and who should die. What has gotten into people and why are they so angry and why do they feel good saying horrible things. I truly feel sorry for his widow and the children that will grow up without knowing their father.

Brad was my cousin and his family is devastated. You heartless people that say he deserved it will get what you deserve someday, I am sure. Brad was a very intelligent, kind hearted, loving father and husband. You do not know his circumstances or his health issues. Do you really think it is OK for police to shoot reckless drivers? There would be a whole lot of teenagers and old folks dead if that were the case! I am looking at a picture of him dressed up for Halloween with his wife and 4 year old triplets. They all look so happy and my heart is just breaking! The police could have found another way to stop him. They don't shoot murderers and rapists, but it is OK to shoot a reckless driver?

Kim, if police are called to a situation where a rapist or murderer is still in the act of committing a crime and these suspects don't surrender and threaten the lives of the officers and others, yes, police will shoot them as well.

What seems to be lost on some people is that Brad made the choices that lead to this situation. The officers on the scene had a job to do & that was to protect the people that area, as he (Brad) took little or no regard for them in the parking lots, the streets & the sidewalks. Granted no one knows what was going through Brads mind, but he made a choice to drink & get behind the wheel, HE started the chain of events that lead to his demise. I do feel bad for his wife, children & family & their loss. All Brad had to do was stop & he would be alive today.

Brad's behavior resulted in his death. There were many innocent children, moms and dads in cars endangered by Brad's irresponsible driving. I am thankful no one was killed due to his behavior. The police did what they had to do to make sure others will have family photos at Halloween next year. In the end, I doubt anyone is happy with the outcome, but do understand certain behaviors produce certain results. I hope his children do well in life, and i am thankful Brad did not have his own kids in that car and thankful he did not kill anyone due to his poor decision making behind the wheel.

4:08 pm on Friday, November 30, 2012
Fact is you have NO idea what caused Brad to drive the way he did. For all you know he could have been having a seizure while driving, or a heart attack, or any number of things and instead of trying to stop the vehicle in a way that no one got killed a police officer used deadly force in an area full of people. Real smart. The police should have disabled the vehicle or Brad without KILLING HIM and perhaps tried to get him whatever help, medical or otherwise, that he needed. I'm sure Brad's kids would be equally happy to have family photos with their father next Halloween as anyone else. But, Mr. DunwoodyWorkingMan, being judgemental is just so darn easy isn't it?

I agree that he needed to be stopped. However, I do not believe he needed to be shot and killed as a result of his gunshot wounds to accomplish that. They could have shot the tires, hit him in the shoulder instead of the chest. I know of many police chases at high speeds on highways that didn't involve gunshots! I just think it is crazy. We had an old woman here that killed 3 people because she should not have been behind the wheel and would not stop for police because she was out of her mind. Should the police have shot her? I am grateful that Brad's actions did not result in any serious injuries to others or to the children. I know that would make things so much harder for our family. However, I am disgusted by strangers that say he deserved it. I don't even live in GA. I live in NY and was just trying to find some answers when I stumbled upon these horrible comments. It was like a knife to my heart.

Thank you Laura. It is the "not knowing" that is the hardest thing. The wondering what got into him. I just want these comments to stop before his mother or grandmother or wife reads them. How would people feel if it was someone they loved.

Mario,
No endowment from me, but I pay taxes for a great police department. I have no anger in my comments, only the truth. Typical liberal name-calling on your part. Name-calling is always an indicator of being on the wrong side of an issue. If the family and friends need a place to grieve and communicate, I suggest a different forum other than the Patch (where comments live forever and ever). And Laura, there are usually three sides to a story. The truth, the police version, and the family's version. The Patch has trolls like Rob (who hates hawks apparently) and Jimmie (Rob's cousin on his mother's side). Let's let the man rest in peace and may God protect the children.

Shooting all 4 tires, a hand, the car, so many options other than TAKING A LIFE. You are not God. If you are entrusted to uphold the law, do so with so much more care and/or training, and at the very least, remorse for this outcome. If he could aim for a person inside a car, he could aim for a tire outside a car. How many people with evil intent do you know that choose to drive recklessly in a police parking lot?? Mental issues, a stroke, a brain aneurysm (happened to a friend of ours and she behaved the same, only she wasn't in a car), you DON'T KNOW what happened. Unless you are God, stop judging. We are all human, we all have flaws and it is easy to judge/choose the wrong path. Someday you may need the compassion of fellow humans, and I hope they manage to show you some love instead of hate too. My heart goes out to a poor young woman who has lost the love if her life and who has to raise three triplets alone, who will never have their father to walk them down the aisle. Know that none of you, including Bradley, are alone. God bless.

Ok I understand there was a life lost and yes is is unfortunate, but lets think about the people that were hit and the mother in the car with her child that Brad was hung up on. Lets think about the thought going through the officers mind at the time he had to make the choice to shoot. Now let me ask a question...Do we know for certain that the shot that Sgt. Dove fired is what caused him to die...lets remember he drove about 2 more blocks and hit a light pole AND got out of the car and ran. What would we all be saying if Brad had killed a father of 7 in his pursuit? What would we be saying if he had killed an expectant mother? I am thankful while stuck in the traffic jam that they responded the way they did, they saved many lives and people made it out with scratches and dings on their cars. He may have had a stroke or something when he hit the light pole but someone having these types of health issues does not make U-turns and drive on sidewalks. Again I feel for the family and their loss, but I also feel for the officer that probably has a family too and could have not made it home from work that night due to Brads actions. So EVERYONE needs to stop being negative one way or the other and let Brads family move forward and Sgt. Dove move forward.

I was a witness of the shooting and my car was damaged. However, this man has left triplets and a wife behind and my heart goes out to the Almy's family. If a family member can contact me via email, I would like to give the children a Christmas gift. Please contact me at kingdomgirlministries@gmail.com.

You are absolutely warmhearted.. Being involved in this incident yet not passing judgement. We are family friends of his grandmother and just heard of this horribly tragedy today. In seeking facts into whjat happened, (it appears there are a few different versions out there) i came across this post. Riddled with bickering individuals with irrelevant material but your post is an absolute breath of fresh air and your kindness is extremely commendable. May God Bless you, Brad, his three children, and his family..

This guy came about 2 feet from plowing into my car in the CPK parking lot. I don't care what kind of person he was before that Wednesday night... His behavior was inexcusable, and unfortunately for him, it got him killed. The officer did the right thing. No telling how many people would have been hurt or killed if the police had let this guy keep plowing into people. I have NEVER witnessed someone drive with such complete disregard for other people. If a child, family, anyone had been walking from the restaurant to their car, they would have been hit by this selfish jerk.
