Dunwoody Graduates Earn $12 Million in Scholarships

165 seniors from the 2011 graduating class at Dunwoody High received scholarships including the Gates Millennium Scholarship

After years of concentrating, late nights doing homework, long study sessions and countless hours fine-tuning athletic or musical skills, local students are getting their due.

 graduating class of 2011 has 306 graduates. 165 students are heading to college, getting $12,083,730 in total offered scholarships. They accepted $5,071,670 worth in scholarships.

Administrators at Dunwoody High School were allowed to release an overview of scholarship information but cannot release individual student's names.

Two students received sports scholarships, one student received a music scholarship and the remaining 160 students received academic scholarships.

Darrius Hamilton was awarded the Gates Millennium Scholarship, which was funded with $1 billion by Bill Gates in 1999.  One thousand minority students from across the nation were selected for the 2011 scholarships.

The Gates Millennium Scholarship will cover the disciplines of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health and the sciences. Hamilton will have full tuition paid for through the scholarship.

DHS Valedictorian Eilidh Geddes a full academic scholarship to attend the University of Georgia.

Salutatorian Kathryn Kutner is heading to Georgia Tech on a HOPE Scholarship.
